The Merry Barn has a history of fostering community, including its vibrancy as a popular dance hall, and in more recent years, as a retreat for writers, artists, and other creatives. The stately 1897 barn was previously owned by steeplejacks, who invested in its longevity by placing the barn on a modern, poured concrete foundation, among other improvements. The current owner earned an award from Maine Preservation in 2019 for their high quality, adaptive use renovation of the barn, which included finishing the basement and first floor with all necessary infrastructure (drilled well & water treatment, septic system, insulation, windows & doors, heating & cooling, hardscape & landscape, ADA compliance, etc.). The barn's second and third floors offer space for expansion, perhaps to include a dwelling unit or separate use. In Edgecomb's ''Marine'' zoning district, a long list of uses are allowed with planning board approval. Located on 5.88-acres between Damariscotta and Boothbay Harbor, the Merry Barn is well positioned to draw from both communities, and beyond.
